Course Description
This course explores the strategic management of technology, information, and people from a Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) perspective. The business value and organizational challenges of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, data warehouses, analytics, and Big Data are critically examined through cases and hands-on projects.
Course-Level Student Learning Objectives
1. Explain key functions and challenges of Information Technology (IT) leadership (by analyzing the Austin text)
2. Explain core concepts in the domain of IT (by reading the Gallaugher text)
3. Explain the strategic value of IT (by discussing and analyzing the Austin text, Gallaugher text, and working on the team project)
4. Apply key concepts of analytics to business challenges (via analytics assignments)
5. Produce IT recommendations based on comprehensive assessments of cost, benefits, risks and alternatives. (by working on the team project)
Textbooks
The Austin et al. text is really a fiction novel. This text provides the storyline of the course. Each chapter is based on a real Harvard Business case study on IT issues. Individually you will read several chapters a week, and answer reflection questions (i.e., Individual Assignments) as a way to prepare for case discussions. The Gallaugher text is a traditional textbook which introduces concepts, definitions, and tools you can use for analyzing cases in the Austin book. Individually you will read several chapters a week, and take weekly quizzes based on the text. You should actively use the Gallaugher text as a resource for your case analyses and team project.
